Dellas and the new frontiers
The presence abroad has already been assured by a network of dealers throughout the world, and in 29 countries there is a real distribution structure: this is Dellas today, a company founded in 1973 by Isidoro Ferrari
A company in continuous movement, because mere existence does not always mean being present. In 2010, when the stone working sector in Italy was in moment of crisis, the development of new products and of new lines allowed this company of Lugo di Grezzana to increase its sales by 5%, a target reached again in the first six months of 2011, and the growth trend continues.
A targeted commercial strategy, a flexible but above all young structure, in which the features of a traditional mentality relative to customer care and an avant-garde attitude based on continuous research and constant investment in technology are blended, all accompanied with the awareness that the emerging markets represent, especially for the stone sector, not only a new frontier but also an element that can raise the competitive level. And with this in mind, Dellas – after Spain where it has a foreign subsidiary – disembarked in Ethiopia in February. Ethiopia is, in fact, one of the emerging countries of the sub-Sahara area of the African continent with an enormous capacity for growth in the forthcoming years. And it is precisely here that Dallas has opened a new seat.
"The North African market has long been known: Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt were the first countries where the network of our sector developed. Ethiopia represents a kind of challenge," explains Daniele Ferrari, vice president and assisted in his management of the company by his sister Elisa, responsible for marketing and for human resources. "It is a member of the Union of African Countries, and it is, above all, a corridor towards the other countries. Its economy is based on agriculture, but it registers constant growth of 8% and in the last six years the increase was 11%. Ethiopia has ample marble and granite resources and our presence is therefore particularly important and significant".
Although Italy is traditionally the country in which the stone, which is sent all over the world, is worked, the growth of emerging markets like India and China, great producers of marbles and granites, represents a stimulating and important fact also for a company like Dellas whose target customers are those who seek high quality, offering products of a particularly high level. A niche position in the global market – because Dellas will not compromise its philosophy which has always been to guarantee quality – which can nevertheless represent the added value.
The presence of the company in countries where stone quarrying is particularly intensive offers producers the possibility of processing on site, with the guarantee of a finished product of the same high quality as that produced in Italy, but representing an opportunity of containing costs. "Our products continue to be made in Italy. We absolutely do not want to move the line. Research, technology and assistance remain those that Dellas has always guaranteed its customers. Our presence in Ethiopia represents that indispensable approach to an emerging market which will allow us to be a part of the economy of countries which, until a few years ago, could be reached directly," Ferrari explains.
Over the years, technology, innovation and personal customer care have allowed Dellas not only to be present in the sector of the production of marble working tools, but also to become a leading company thanks to that mix which involves both "old style" customer care, with customised solutions and high level technical assistance, and an avant-garde laboratory which can study the geological features of the stones of the whole world in order to allow Dellas to manufacture products for cutting and for specific work processes. Thanks to this "made to measure" service, the most advanced technologies and the oldest material of the earth are united.
